Typesetting and layout
Advanced text coding and pre-tagging allow smart, cost-effective typesetting and layout for all books, especially for long texts using standard templates.
Editing
On-screen and computerised editing systems can speed up workflow, improve quality and consistency, and therefore reduce cost.
Scanning
Highest-quality photograph scanning from any original, and image manipulation in monochrome or colour. Library collections digitised.
Photography
Medium-format film and digital photography. Copy stand and studio work on site or here in Lancaster.
Illustration
Watercolours, cartoons, illustration, cartography, diagrams ... as well as original artwork executed by talented illustrators and cartographers.
Jacket design and origination
Book covers and jackets designed and originated ready for print and promotion.
Carnegie Book Production is the typesetting, design and graphics arm of Carnegie Publishing, which was set up by Alistair Hodge to publish a range of history books. Carnegie Book Production itself was established in the mid 1980s, just at the time when the first computerised typesetting systems were being introduced. Around 1987 we bought our first typesetting machine; it was so slow that it could take up to 90 seconds just to refresh the screen when an italic code was inserted! The hard disk was a state-of-the-art 40Mb Winchester, and the machine only worked with 640k base RAM. Fortunately the computers are a little faster these days and – if the manuscript is reasonably clean – the typesetting and layout procedure is stunningly fast and accurate.
Since those early days the range of services we offer to other publishers has grown considerably. On this website you will find very brief details of what we can offer. We have over 20 years experience of typesetting, page design and high-quality typography. And because we are publishers ourselves, we really do understand the way in that books are put together.
